Alexander Graham Bell (3 March 1847 – 2 August 1922) was an eminent scientist, inventor and innovator. Most often associated with the invention of the telephone, Bell was also called “the father of the deaf”. His father, grandfather and brother had all been associated with work on elocution and speech, and both his mother and wife were deaf, profoundly influencing Bell’s life’s work. His research on hearing and speech further led him to experiment with hearing devices that eventually culminated in Bell being awarded the first U.S. patent for the invention of the telephone in 1876.

Eugenics
Along with many very prominent thinkers and scientists of the time, Bell was connected with the eugenics movement in the United States. In his lecture Memoir upon the formation of a deaf variety of the human race presented to the National Academy of Sciences on 13 November 1883 he noted that congenitally deaf parents were more likely to produce deaf children and tentatively suggested that couples where both parties were deaf should not marry. However, it was his hobby of livestock breeding which led to his appointment to biologist David Starr Jordan’s Committee on Eugenics, under the auspices of the American Breeders Association. The committee unequivocally extended the principle to man. From 1912 until 1918 he was the chairman of the board of scientific advisers to the Eugenics Record Office associated with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, and regularly attended meetings. In 1921, he was the honorary president of the Second International Congress of Eugenics held under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Organisations such as these advocated passing laws (with success in some states) that established the compulsory sterilization of people deemed to be, as Bell called them, a “defective variety of the human race”. By the late 1930s, about half the states in the U.S. had eugenics laws, and the California laws were used as a model for eugenics laws in Nazi Germany.

His ideas about people he considered defective centered on the deaf. This was because of his feelings for his deaf family and his contact with deaf education. In addition to advocating sterilization of the deaf, Bell wished to prohibit deaf teachers from being allowed to teach in schools for the deaf. He worked to outlaw the marriage of deaf individuals to one another, and he was an ardent supporter of oralism over the use of sign language to educate deaf students.

His avowed goal was to eradicate the language and culture of the deaf so as to encourage them to assimilate into the hearing culture, for their own long-term benefit and for the benefit of society at large.
Although he supported what some consider harsh and inhumane policies today, he was not unkind to deaf individuals who supported his theories of oralism.

Is AGBell really “the father of the deaf”?…when he was an eugenicist towards Deaf Culture and Sign Language? He supported genocidal-like plans toward Deaf people’s natural language!

A reliable source is reporting that a meeting has been scheduled for 3:30 pm today (Thursday) in the Chapel on the campus of the North Carolina School for the Deaf.

Parents have been invited to attend. An official from the North Carolina state
government will be in attendance and will speak with the parents.

The school is located at: 517 W. Fleming Dr, in Morganton, North Carolina.

What Happened in the Chapel on Sunday?
I have had the privilege of speaking with a student who was among the
students in the Chapel last Sunday evening. With the student’s permission,
I am going to post my questions and the student’s answers.

Did the administrators tell you where you were going when they took you from the dorm?
When I arrived dorm, they took me out of main building without telling me
where I was going. I was little confused and scared. Then I was planning to
text my mom but Janet (McDaniel-Principal) took it.

What was the mood like?
Their mood were like mad, furious, and seemed like they were ready to
threaten me.

Were they forceful or was it a chat type?
Forceful

Why didn’t you eat until after 8:30 pm?
I didn’t eat since lunch and until 8:30 because the administrators and
principals questioning the students and me too much for almost 3 hours
and told us if we did the protest then we won’t be graduating, don’t get good
job and colleges won’t accept you. “You also will get consequences for that”.

Why were you in the Chapel so long?
We stayed in the Chapel too long to find out who was leader, who’s idea,
and tried to prevent our rights to protest.

Could you leave the Chapel if you wanted to?
I can’t leave Chapel if I want to.

Why were you protesting, or what did you want from the administration?
Because we are not happy with Dr. Lindsey, Jody Self (Residential Life
Director), and Janet McDaniel. They don’t have any deaf education background,
too cruel to deaf children, and treated us unfair, and think we’re deaf and dumb!

Wow! The last statement is sad really. It says so much. These students
feel as if their educators look down on them. Aren’t educators supposed
to build our children up?

I really can’t imagine that any one of those adults thought this was OKAY!
Not to mention, this student attempted to contact a parent and the pager
was confiscated! These are STUDENTS not criminals!! Heck, even
criminals are allowed one phone call!

I say BRAVO to this, and all students involved for waking everyone up!

They start demanding other Deaf people to start subtitling their ASl Vlog for English-only (monolingual) minded individuals that does take a lot of time to do it.

Many of the Deaf Vloggers have already started doing that but they realize that it is taking a lot of their time to do it, especially in DEAFREAD.COM and gave up on it.

If these monolingual or semi-monolingual could do their effort to start a subtitling ASL(video) for those that don’t have the skills to read English subtitles… like those 30 to 50 million hearing “American” people in USA that are illiterated, then maybe the Deaf Vloggers will understand why they should do the same for those monolingual that have a hard time understanding ASL.

But at the same time we need to think for our Deaf-Blind friends too and technology will help us to improve our ability to do this in the future for them.

Please remember that those that don’t have the English skills is because they did not have a cognitive language(ASL) being with and was “forced” to learn the monolingual method(oral English only) rather than the bilingual method(ASL and English-reading and writing).

The “Monolingual Method” is the AGBell ideology for the deaf which has failed in the past 128 years.

He is a funny blogger with an evil intention to mislead the community to be protesting with a sign “GONAD” because there was no room to put space between GO and NAD so the sign was saying “GONAD”.

The commentors in this blogger’s post apparently knew what the word GONAD meant and thought that this blogger was so cute and some even sounded “turned on” and giggled.

My friend wanted to know what GONAD means and looked up in google and here’s what she found.

The gonad is the organ that makes gametes. The gonads in males are the testes and the gonads in females are the ovaries. The product, gametes, are haploid germ cells. For example, spermatozoon and egg cells are gametes. Although medically the gonad term can refer to either male gonads (testicles) or female gonads (ovaries), the vernacular, or slang use of “gonads” (or “nads”) usually only refers to the testicles.

My friend was sick to see this and not only she was disgusted with this blogger’s continuing using his pervert-minded articles in DeafRead but also these commentors are just as filthy.

We really need to clean this up now and weed out those kind of people! Includes whoever this Deafread editor that allowed this to be posted!

Some members of DHHS express their disappointment of Alexander T. Graham and Karen Youdelman’s letter that showed their perspective of Deaf people that uses sign language.

AG Bell Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHHS) members are adults who experienced hearing loss at birth and use spoken language as their primary mode of communication. AG Bell DHHS members are technology savvy using the latest in hearing (digital hearing aids and cochlear implants) and communication technology.

Should AG Bell remove their exclusionary leaders and start having new leaders that will build the “harmony” bridge for all Deaf and Hard of Hearing people together and have equal respect for American Sign Language and other mode of communications for all deaf babies and children in schools?

If the Black Community can demand Don Imus to be fired, then the Deaf Community can demand Alexander T. Graham and Karen Youdelman to be fired from AG Bell.

Why are these Oral Militants reading, blogging, vlogging and being involved in DeafRead?

The genuine Deaf people are in DeafRead to learn from other bloggers and vloggers.

But these Oral Militants Teasers are not in DeafRead to be empowered or to learn anything from the Deaf community. They are just “party crashers”…invading someone’s turf to have a good time just for themselves.

A blogger called us a Deaf Militants just because one deaf “abused” person got upset with her and her “teasing” attitude to the Deaf community. What benefit does this lady have being in DeafRead? None! Then why she continue to blog her “teasing” or express her “subtle” aggorant supremacy attitude style of writing in DeafRead?

Oh, there is another Oral Militant “teaser”, a true colonialized hearing impaired guy that likes to demoralized the Deaf community by doing orally motor mouthing on Vlogging despite that he does have “minimal” sign language “fourth grade level” skills but nonetheless, he seems to enjoy doing it due to his possibility of his social problems as an oralist in the hearing world.

Should these Oral Militants enjoy their subtle bashing to the Deaf community in DeafRead?

In a letter written to PepsiCo corporate executives, Youdelman and Graham stated, “Although we appreciate Pepsi’s efforts to encourage new promotional ideas from your rank-and-file employees and your willingness to celebrate diversity, we would be remiss if we did not call your attention to the fact that…your advertisement perpetuates a common myth that all people who are deaf can only communicate using sign language.”

Youdelman and Graham then called upon PepsiCo to continue “…to educate the public…and promote appreciation for those individuals that go above and beyond to overcome the absence of something many of us take for granted – the miracle of sound.”
