AG Bell Speaks Up on Pepsi Super Bowl Commercial

AG Bell’s Board President, Karen Youdelman, and Executive Director, Alexander T. Graham, spoke up about http://www.magnetmail1.net/ls.cfm?r=129479486&sid=3400128&m=426414&u=AGBELL&s=http://www.pepsi.com/bobshouse/

Pepsi’s upcoming Super Bowl commercial featuring a deaf storyline. In a letter written to PepsiCo corporate executives, Youdelman and Graham stated, “Although we appreciate Pepsi’s efforts to encourage new promotional ideas from your rank-and-file employees and your willingness to celebrate diversity, we would be remiss if we did not call your attention to the fact that…your advertisement perpetuates a common myth that all people who are deaf can only communicate using sign language.”

Youdelman and Graham then called upon PepsiCo to continue “…to educate the public…and promote appreciation for those individuals that go above and beyond to overcome the absence of something many of us take for granted – the miracle of sound.”

    Muriel,

Can you write a blog or comment why you think that the ASL commercial is biased?

Remember that AGBELL people are NAZI, RACISM, CRIME against DEAF’s ASL language……They should be arrested and put them in jail for a long time!! Long Live ASL!!

AGBELL says that commercial shouldn’t be on t.v because not all deaf people use sign language? If that is how we decide what gets to be on t.v then we need to stop showing NBA games because not all white people can play basketball. We can’t show good-looking actresses anymore either…not all women are a dress size 2 with huge breasts. Of course we can have a commercial about deaf people that use sign language! It would be impossible to represent all types of deaf people and promote the BEAUTY of a SILENT language at the same time! AG BELL sounds like a whining 4-year-old.

    Hey AGBELL

Leave our deaf children alone. They don’t deserve to be on your unsuccessful list. The miarcle of sound has failed children’s success and education! We, DEAF people, have promised that we will fight against you and protecting our innocent deaf children from you. We support deaf children’s right to ASL!

Long Live ASL, Deaf Culture and Deafhood!

I just e-mailed to PepsiCo and I recognized that PepsiCo stated “the outpouring of support, both inside the company and amoung viewers has been overwhelming” which is GREAT NEWS. However, it is PepsiCo’s perspective… what about our perspective of this quote… you would probably saying “not enough”… please keep going to send e-mail to PepsiCo… make it NOT twice, NOT triplets, NOT quadruplets, why not sextuplets?

A recent report on the captioning of Super Bowl ads came out… both Pepsi commercials (including the one that is signed) were not captioned.

I loved the commercial’s take on the deaf culture – and I think it was sorely needed, but Pepsi should also be scolded for not captioning their commercials. The deaf community needs to be united – those who sign and those who don’t.

    AGBELL!

What are you thinking? ASL is a gift from GOD!

    GET LOST!

    To AGBell, and Muriel,

I grew up in the Oralism way. Guess what? I got zero education. Why? The teachers dont look at me when they address the class. The Speech
Therapist instisted, no make that REQUIRED that I use my free hour for b o r i n g r e p e a t i n g something that she called speech reading. U got to understand something. If the child has zero langauge, how do u expect the child to understand flapping lips!?! Oralism FAILS!

Now, lets talk about the commercial. What common myth did it show that ALL Deaf ppl use sign langauge? What part of the commercial did u see as “unreal”? The fact it was nite time, and they used the dome light to communicate? Was that “unreal”? The fact that they forgot where Bob lived? Come on, show me who has Perfect memory! Is that “unreal”? The fact that they used sign langauge to communicate? Do u know how many millions of Deaf ppl use sign to clearly communicate instead of using flappy spitting lips? The fact these Deaf guys actually drive a pickup? Oh my god that is unreal. Nothing to mention dangerous!! Why? They cant hear!! Oh my god!! Muriel, Join us in the 21st Century. Lets make this the greatest Century in Deaf ppl Lives.
